The Truth About Vegan And Faux Fabrics: Greenwashing Or Sustainable Fashion?

In today’s world of fashion, sustainability has become more of a marketing buzzword than a genuine commitment. We are being bombarded with promises of “vegan” and “faux” fabrics as the future of ethical style. These labels though seemingly progressive, are often more about greenwashing than about offering real solutions for a sustainable planet.

Let’s take a closer look.

The Problem with “Vegan” and “Faux” Fabrics

When most people hear “vegan leather” or “faux suede,” they might imagine these materials as eco-friendly alternatives to traditional animal-based products. In reality many of these fabrics are derived from synthetic, petroleum-based materials like polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). These are at their core, plastics—and plastics as we all know, are among the least sustainable materials on Earth. It just doesn’t add up.

Consider this:

  • Energy Intensive Production: Manufacturing polyurethane and PVC consumes significant amounts of fossil fuels and water. According to a report from the European Commission, the production of 1 kilogram of polyurethane releases between 2.5 and 4.6 kilograms of CO2 into the atmosphere.
  • Non-Biodegradability: These materials don’t decompose in a natural environment. Instead, they break down into microplastics, which infiltrate ecosystems, harming wildlife and potentially entering our food and water systems.
  • Toxic Chemicals: The production process for synthetic fabrics often involves harmful chemicals, such as phthalates, which are linked to serious health issues, including hormone disruption and developmental problems.

While companies tout these “vegan” and Faux options as cruelty-free, they conveniently ignore the environmental cruelty involved in their creation. Remember, it was primarily the environmentalist lobby that convinced us to ditch paper bags in the grocery store in favor of plastic in order to be more sustainable and “save the trees”.

Natural vs. Faux: A Misguided Comparison

Natural fibers such as wool, leather, and silk have been unfairly demonized in favor of these synthetic alternatives. But when we assess their overall lifecycle impact, natural materials often come out ahead:

  • Durability and Longevity: A well-made leather jacket can last decades and even be repaired, reducing waste. Faux leather, on the other hand, cracks and peels within a few years, often ending up in landfills.
  • Biodegradability: Natural materials like wool and leather decompose over time, returning nutrients to the soil. Synthetic fabrics? They’re here for centuries, or who really knows how long? Truth is we haven’t been around long enough to find out.
  • Renewable Resources: Materials like wool and leather come from renewable sources when farmed responsibly. Ethical farming practices and regenerative agriculture can even contribute to carbon sequestration. Not to mention shaving the useful wool from lambs and goats for example, actually extends their lifetime; while also providing quality raw materials.

The Greenwashing Dilemma

Fashion brands have capitalized on the growing consumer demand for sustainability by slapping on terms like “vegan” or “faux” without addressing the larger environmental cost. This is greenwashing—a practice designed to make products appear more environmentally friendly than they are.

For instance a study by the Changing Markets Foundation found that 59% of sustainability claims by fashion brands were misleading or unsubstantiated. Words like “conscious” or “eco-friendly” were used without ANY clear evidence or metrics to back them up.

A Better Path Forward

True sustainability in fashion isn’t about trendy buzzwords; it’s about thoughtful choices, transparency, and an honest commitment to reducing harm. Here are a few principles to guide us:

  1. Choose Quality Over Quantity: Invest in well-made garments crafted from natural fibers that stand the test of time. A single bespoke piece can replace the need for multiple lower-quality items. Don’t be a polyester investor!
  2. Support Ethical Practices: Seek brands that prioritize responsible sourcing, fair labor practices, and transparency in their supply chain. Start reading the label and consider the fabric and country of production.
  3. Repair and Reuse: Extending the life of your clothing is one of the most impactful ways to reduce waste. Find a local tailor and understand the proper care of your garment.
  4. Educate Yourself: Read the labels or product description and reviews, do a little research. You’re likely shopping online anyway! Understand the lifecycle of the fabrics you’re wearing. Don’t be swayed by marketing jargon—demand evidence.

The allure of “sustainable” vegan and faux fabrics might be strong, but the facts tell a different story. Genuine sustainability requires us to look beyond the labels and make decisions that prioritize quality, longevity, and respect for the planet. It’s not just about feeling good about what we wear—it’s about making choices that truly align with a better future for everyone.

Fashion should never be disposable, nor should its promises. Let’s demand better—from brands, from fabrics, and more importantly, from ourselves.

Destination Location? How to pack Your Suit or Formal Wear and Travel Like a Pro

Traveling with suits or formal attire can be daunting. Whether you’re heading to a wedding, a business meeting, or another event, keeping your clothes crisp and ready is key. Here’s some packing travel wisdom we share with our clients at The Clothing Coach for the best ways to ensure your formalwear looks sharp when you arrive.

1. Avoid Wearing Event Attire in Transit

The first rule for any trip involving extended travel time—whether by plane, car, or train—is to avoid wearing your formal attire en route. Sitting for hours on end in a suit or formal outfit often leads to wrinkling in all the wrong places. So, unless absolutely necessary, pack it instead. Not only will your suit stay fresh, but you’ll feel more comfortable and ready to look your best when you arrive.

2. For Short Road Trips or Minimalist Packing: Use a Garment Bag

If you’re only bringing one suit and have limited luggage, a garment bag is the way to go. Simply hang your suit, zip the garment bag, and fold it once before placing it in your suitcase or laying it flat in the backseat. The key to keeping your suit looking fresh is to minimize movement within your luggage. One fold across the middle is often all it needs; the crease should fall out naturally once the suit is hung at your destination.

3. Packing for Longer Trips or Checked Baggage Without a Hanger

For air travel or situations where you’re checking in luggage and have no garment bag, here’s the Coach’s top tip for wrinkle-free results:

  • Turn it Inside Out: Begin by carefully turning your suit jacket and trousers inside out. This protects the fabric from external dirt and reduces visible wrinkles.
  • Align and Straighten: Make sure the shoulders and sleeves are aligned, and the arms are straightened into a natural position.
  • Roll (Don’t Fold): Gently roll the suit rather than folding it. Not too tightly, but enough to maintain its shape. This technique keeps it compact and prevents hard creases. Place it in a section of your luggage where it won’t shift around.

When you arrive, turn the suit right side out and hang it up immediately. The fabric should settle and smooth out within a few hours, leaving your suit looking sharp without the need for pressing.

4. Final Tips for Extra Assurance

  • Unpack as Soon as You Arrive: Whether you’ve folded, rolled or hung your suit in a garment bag, take it out as soon as you reach your destination. Hang it up in a well-ventilated area, ideally in the bathroom with some humidity, to help any minor creases relax.
  • Use a Steamer if Necessary: For stubborn wrinkles, a small travel steamer can be a lifesaver. Hold it a few inches from the fabric and let the steam relax any creases.

With these tried-and-true packing techniques, you’ll ensure that your formalwear arrives looking as polished as you do. Follow these simple steps to keep your suit fresh, neat, and ready for your next event—because every detail counts when it comes to looking your best!

Best Practices for Selecting Your Groom’s Wedding Outfit

Ladies and gentlemen it is a great time to dive into the essentials of picking the perfect wedding outfit for the groom. Getting ready for a summer or fall wedding thoughtfully is easy if you just understand a few things. This is your big day, and you deserve to look nothing short of spectacular.

Congratulations! Let’s break down the best practices for selecting your groom’s wedding Outfit

Know Your Style

First things first, identify your personal style. Are you a classic black-tie kind of guy, or do you lean towards a more modern more relaxed vibe? Your wedding attire should reflect your personality and make you feel comfortable and confident, while also mindful of venue, environment and any relevant themes.

Fit is Everything

No matter what style you choose, the fit is crucial. Ill-fitting clothes can ruin even the most expensive suit. Make sure your jacket hugs your shoulders and neck, your trousers have the right length, worn properly on the waist and everything in between is tailored to perfection.(or to the garment’s best possible potential) Consider a custom or bespoke suit for a truly flawless fit.

Consider the Venue and Theme

Your wedding’s setting and theme play a significant role in your attire choice. A beach wedding calls for lighter fabrics and colors, while a formal ballroom event might require a tuxedo or black tie formal. Match your outfit to the level of formality and vibe of the venue and theme.

Color Coordination

Coordinate with your partner, wedding party and colors. You should never match exactly, yet your outfit should complement the overall color scheme. Navy, charcoal, and classic black are more traditional safe bets in formal venues, but don’t shy away from subtle hues that add a personal touch. Accessories and details matter!

Accessorize Wisely

Accessories can elevate your look and are what separate and exceptional experience and memorable photos. Think about a sharp tie or bowtie, a pocket square, cufflinks, and a stylish watch. This is an event where your shoes must be crispy fresh and new. These details add personality, polish and most importantly distinguishment to your outfit. Just remember, most often less is more—avoid over-accessorizing, it’s about thoughtful intentional accessorizing.

Footwear Matters

Your shoes should be as sharp as your suit, and brand spanking new. (repetitiveness on purpose, could i be more clear!?)  Classic leather oxfords or brogues in black or brown are timeless choices for formal events. Make sure they’re polished and in what condition? Yes, NEW. Comfort is key, so break them in before the big day by wearing them indoors for a few hours a couple times.

Grooming is Key

A well-groomed appearance is paramount and best compliments your outfit. Get a fresh haircut within 4 days before the wedding, maintain your facial hair and consider a skincare routine leading up to the event. Clean, manicured nails are a must and in a pinch, use vaseline to polish those nails. Lotion your hands, drink plenty of water and look refreshed, excited and hydrated!

Don’t Forget the Undergarments

Quality undergarments can make a significant difference. Invest in good socks and an undershirt that keeps you cool and comfortable. So seriously, absolutely NO POLYESTER INVESTOR in this department. Ever, wedding day or not! Cotton undergarments that are minimally 95% cotton or more ensure you feel as good as you look. On big days, I recommend wearing everything brand new, to best add to your own energy and confidence. It radiates, and will be the best and most memorable detail of all.

Plan Ahead

Don’t leave your wedding attire to the last minute, tailoring alone takes time. Start shopping and scheduling fittings several months in advance. This gives you ample time for different options, custom and bespoke clothing, tailoring adjustments and overall ensures everything is perfect for your big day.

Confidence is Key

Finally, the best accessory of all (that I’ve already alluded to) you can wear is confidence. Stand tall, smile and enjoy every moment. Height is a physical attribute, and also a state of mind. After all, it’s your day…and you deserve to look and feel amazing!

So there it is, follow these tips and you’ll be the epitome of style on your wedding day. Remember, it’s all about finding the perfect balance between comfort, style and personal expression. How to develop style as a man?

Developing personal style as a man may involve several aspects. While mindset is and goal setting is key, the outside-In coaching is all about understanding and expressing identity through your clothing and grooming choices. So How do you begin to develop style as a man? What you may not realize is that your current style identity (or lack there of) is expressing something whether you are trying...or not. So it’s best to continue you reading if you’ve decided you’d like to control this non-verbal narrative, or save us both the trouble if you’d rather continue leaving it open for interpretation. In order to successfully best develop your personal brand image, this process must be authentically you in consistently effortless fashion (pun intended). Here are some steps to help you develop your style:

1. Know Your Body Type

  • Assess your body shape: Understanding whether you are tall, short, broad or slim. Love yourself and embrace where and who you are. Don’t wait until you get where you plan or hope to be. It’s a process. Embracing who you are will help you choose clothes that fit well and select choices most flattering to your physique. Adjust when necassary.
  • Finding the right fit: Clothes that fit well are key to looking stylish. Avoid anything too tight or too loose, yet fit is also impacted by make, model and fabric. Understand your measurements, relative to a garments ‘fit’ (not just size label). Current trends are about 25% of the equation.

2. Understand the Basics of Fashion

  • Wardrobe essentials: Start with classic pieces like a well-fitted white shirt, dark jeans, a blazer, and versatile high quality shoes. This is not about following trends, yet more about building a foundation. View your wardrobe as a puzzle, fitting in pieces that are part of creating a larger cohesive picture.
  • Color coordination: Learn the basics of matching colors. Neutral tones (black, white, grey, navy, and beige) are versatile and can be combined easily, and begin to understand what color are most flattering to you, and which to avoid.

3. Build a Capsule Wardrobe

  • Quality over quantity: Invest in high-quality pieces that can be mixed and matched and most importantly stand the test of time. Be intentional and thoughtful to turn this necessary cost, into an investment.
  • Timeless pieces: Focus on timeless items that won’t go out of style quickly. Avoid trendy, fast fashion option made with low quality synthetic fabrics as this will lead to failed out of shape puzzle pieces that can’t create a larger picture.

4. Experiment and Find Your Style

  • Try different styles: Experiment with various styles to see what resonates with you. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone occasionally. There will be some growing pains, hiring a Clothing Coach or other professional is a major hack to avoid this, depending on your overall budget. It’s either time or money, just remember you often get what you pay for.
  • Incorporate trends selectively: While trends can be fun, choose only those that suit your style and personality. Environment is important to factor in, as there are times where it is best to blend in over standing out, depending on your goals of course. This is where you begin to understand wardrobe as a language.

5. Pay Attention to Details

  • Accessories: Incorporate accessories like watches, belt, and hats when appropriate to add personality to your outfits. These details can often make the best ice breakers and invite more engagement, especially when networking or interviewing.
  • Grooming: A well-groomed appearance complements your style. Maintain a regular grooming routine, including haircuts, skincare and facial hair maintenance. This is of equal importance to wardrobe selections as far developing a recognizable and memorable personal brand image,

6. Develop Signature Elements

  • Find your signature: Whether it’s a particular type of jacket, color, a favorite pair of shoes, or a specific accessory...-having a signature element can set your style apart. Be original, authentic and most importantly, memorable.
  • Consistency: Consistency in your style choices helps build a recognizable personal brand. You get better at it, and it becomes who you are. You are what you eat…you also are what you wear. There’s a reason why I am consistently repetitive with certain points. 😉

7. Seek Inspiration

  • Look at style icons: Observe how well-dressed men put together their outfits. This could be celebrities, public figures, or even stylish friends. Look a little closer as to why that style turns you on, and emulate, DON’T IMITATE.
  • Fashion media: Read fashion magazines, blogs, and follow social media accounts dedicated to men’s fashion for ideas and inspiration. Remember, use these tools more in view of a trendsetter, and don’t follow the trend trap.

8. Be Confident

  • Confidence: The most important aspect of style is how you carry yourself. Wear your clothes with confidence and own your look. The best part about executing the above, is this feature gains prominence naturally. And it shows.

Practical Tips

  • Tailoring: Get your clothes tailored for a perfect fit. Think beyond suits, maybe a sweater or tee should be altered?
  • Footwear: Invest in good quality shoes; they can elevate your entire outfit. (It’s hard to be cheap here and get away with it)
  • Seasonal adjustments: Adapt your wardrobe according to the seasons, incorporating appropriate fabrics and layers.

Developing your style is a journey that involves understanding self. Through experimenting and study, you can refine your choices over time. Remember style is not just about following fashion but about expressing who you are.

What is the fabric with the highest frequency?

Sure you knew your phone and radio emit frequencies, but if everything is some sort of energy…does your clothing!? Studies have been done to show that natural fibers far outperform synthetic ones on another scale, yet again. This may seem unnecessary to consider, however fabrics do impact the regulation of your body temp, which impacts your sleep and overall daily comfort. Ya you sleep on your bedsheets, but you literally LIVE in your clothing. I’d say that’s a pretty significant (yet often overlooked) impact on quality of life. Fabric is more than just how it feels on touch, it’s how it performs, breathability being a key factor. So what is the fabric with highest frequency?

Linen is a natural textile made from the fibers of the flax plant and has been used for thousands of years in various civilizations for clothing, bedding, and other textiles. Wool is just as old and both rank highest as far as frequency. (5,000)

Linen fabric is prized for its exceptional qualities, including its strength, durability, and breathability. It is known for its smooth texture, natural luster and ability to absorb moisture. This makes it comfortable to wear in warm weather, so it’s a great time of year to consider. *Quick bonus: It’s supposed to wrinkle! Embrace the look, and ignore those who don’t get it.

Linen also has natural antimicrobial properties, (not chemically added) which can help inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi, making it a popular choice for bedding and clothing. It’s known for comfort, and linen sheets are recognized among the best. Perhaps we should also consider it’s use as a blend in workout gear. A time when your body aims for peak performance, and absorbs most through open pores as you work up a sweat.

The prevalent preference of synthetic fabric and polyesters (especially for gym gear) will likely prove to be misguided. As it has been for many natural food substitutes. Remember these innovations are often a product of reducing cost and increasing profits. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the potential health benefits of linen, wool, cotton and other natural fabrics. Particularly in relation to their purported ability to emit higher frequencies. Some proponents believe this may have positive effects on the human body and mind, what I can confirm after decades of selling clothing is natural fibers perform better and raise your quality of life in more ways than one.

Is there such a thing as a power suit?

A “power suit” traditionally refers to a formal business attire worn by management. The term gained prominence in the 1980s during the era of corporate power dressing, characterized by assertive and authoritative styles in the workplace. But in 2024, is there even such a thing as a power suit?

The concept of the power suit emerged as a symbol of professional success, authority and confidence. It was popularized by influential figures primarily in business and politics and those who adopted the attire wanted to convey a sense of power and influence. The power suit became associated with corporate culture and the idea of “dressing for success” emphasizing the importance of projecting a strong and commanding image in the workplace.

The term was coined to capture the notion that dressing this way imbued individuals with a sense of empowerment and authority in turn allowing them to command respect and assert their dominance in professional settings. This is characterized by tailored silhouettes with structured shoulders and neutral colors, all meant to evoke a sense of professionalism and seriousness.

In today’s less formal and hybrid work environments, the concept of the power suit has evolved to accommodate changing workplace norms and cultural shifts. Here in SF and silicon valley, dressing like you just rolled out of bed became a form of a ‘power suit’ believe it or not with it’s inherent ‘F you, I’ll do what I want’ attitude. While the traditional power suit may no longer be as prevalent, its traditional tenants of confidence, professionalism and authority remain relevant. Focusing on an authentic and aligned personal brand image is a more sophisticated way of achieving the underlying principles of the ‘Power Suit’

In modern and hybrid workplaces, individuals may still utilize elements of power dressing to convey a sense of competence and credibility. This might involve wearing well-tailored clothing that exceeds the company’s culture and expectations, regardless of whether it conforms to traditional notions of formal business attire. Plus the concept of the power suit extends beyond physical attire to encompass aspects such as body language, communication style and overall demeanor. All of which contribute to one’s perceived authority and influence in the workplace.

So while the traditional power suit may have evolved in response to changing workplace dynamics, its core principles of projecting confidence and authority remain pertinent in today’s professional landscape. The main impact in the workplace lies in its ability to shape perceptions of authority, confidence, and professionalism. With a consistent personal brand image, individuals can convey a sense of leadership, boost their self-assurance, and project credibility. This also influences impressions on clients and enhances effectiveness. (CLOSE more deals.)

With over 2 decades of selling suits, But this is why we think The Clothing Coach private label custom suits are the highest value in San Francisco and beyond. We guide you on how to choose was best for you, which creates a timeless investment. This allows you to begin the process of curating a sophisticated wardrobe, that’s effortless to maintain.

You should also know that at any level of custom clothing, the results continue to improve as you create more garments. So your ‘perfect fit’ most likely may come by the 2nd suit you have made. Additional factors equal in importance are the fabric choices in order to best assess expected lifetime. This can be broken down to estimate your ‘price per wear’, further increasing your investment. With that, guidance on creating a style and color that aligns with your personal, professional, or event driven goals is crucial. Once understood, it’s best to compare pricing options between vendors with similar offerings, and you can identify where to go in your area to find the best custom suits. Virtual Interview Success: Crafting Your Look For The Job

In today’s digital landscape virtual interviews have become commonplace, demanding a new level of preparation and attention to detail. While the allure of interviewing from home is undeniable, it’s crucial to recognize the significance of presentation and wardrobe cues that may be overlooked compared to in-person interviews. Non-verbal cues have come to matter more, contrary to popular belief.

Dress the Part: When preparing for a virtual interview, dressing professionally still matters and is still an easy way to stand out and develop trust. Choose attire that exudes confidence and aligns with the company culture. Opt for solid, neutral colors that convey professionalism and avoid distracting patterns. Remember, your appearance sets the tone for the interview and influences the interviewer’s perception of your suitability for the role. Equally important, your own internal feeling and perception is higher with enclothed cognition. “When you look good, you feel good and perform better.”

Mind Your Surroundings: Your interview backdrop plays a crucial role in shaping the interviewer’s impression of you. Select a quiet, well-lit space free of distractions and clutter. Ensure your background is professional and devoid of personal items that may divert attention. This is a better choice over virtual backgrounds, but prioritize authenticity, neatness and professionalism above all else.

Maintain Engagement: Establishing and maintaining eye contact is vital in virtual interviews, just as in-person. While it may feel unnatural, direct your gaze towards the camera (rather than watching yourself or the interviewer) especially when speaking to create a sense of connection with the interviewer. Pay attention to your body language, sitting upright and avoiding fidgeting or slouching. Non-verbal cues may be amplified in virtual settings, so strive for confidence and composure throughout the interview. If multiple participants are present, it is crucial to remain engaged with your camera on throughout the process even at moments of pure participation.

Wrap Up with Gratitude: Following the virtual interview, express gratitude to the interviewer with a concise and personalized thank-you email. Reiterate your interest in the position and highlight key points discussed during the interview. This gesture demonstrates professionalism and appreciation for the opportunity, leaving a positive impression on the interviewer. Your thoughtful presentation (especially from home) subtly conveys additional respect, gratitude and in turn, -trust.

By prioritizing presentation and wardrobe considerations as part of your meticulous preparation and engagement, you can navigate virtual interviews with confidence and professionalism. Remember, your virtual presence speaks volumes about your suitability for the role, so invest time and effort into making a lasting impression.
